### Step 1: Map Your Actual Collection Patterns

Stop guessing. Go back through your last 12 months of data (or 6 months if you're earlier stage) and actually calculate your payment patterns.

For each customer or customer segment:
- What percentage pay within 7 days?
- What percentage pay 8-30 days?
- What percentage pay 31-60 days?
- What percentage require collection calls?
- What percentage take discounts for early payment?

Do this by customer size, industry, and geography if you have variation. This becomes your actual collection curve—the input that should go into your cash flow forecast, not the "net-30" assumption you've been using.

- What if collection rates slip 10%? (Extend everyone's payment timing by a week. What's your runway impact?)
- What if you need to accelerate a planned hire? (Add that payroll two months earlier. Can you still fund it?)
- What if a vendor demands payment upfront? (One of your recurring expenses now hits the balance sheet immediately. What breaks?)

Each of these scenarios is a real possibility. We've seen all of them happen. The question is whether you have the visibility to handle them before they become crises.

## The Specific Mistakes Founders Make in Startup Cash Flow Management

### Mistake 1: Assuming Contracts Equal Cash

A $100,000 annual contract is not $100,000 in cash. It's $8,333 in monthly revenue spread across 12 months, but cash might arrive in lumpy chunks based on payment schedules. If the customer pays quarterly, you get three $25,000 payments, not twelve $8,333 payments.
